well, happy new year.
actually, as sarcastic as that looks on its own at the top of the post like that, and as shitty as my christmas was this year, new year's actually put a smile on my face.
it seems that i'm not the only one capable of surprises. melissa drove up to l.a. from san diego to spend new year's with me. it was ridiculously sweet of her because i know just how hard it must have been for her to brave the l.a. traffic in her little white civic, and in the rain nonetheless.
i was planning to do next to nothing for new year's because at my house holidays are dead and long buried, apparently, and i was one to conform this year. but melissa's arrival sparked a bit of holiday cheer. one might say a short but meaningful warm and fuzzy. either way, i did my best to think up something to do, god forbid we spend new year's at my house where, it would seem, my parents went to bed before midnight anyway.
so melissa and i went out to dinner at the marina then went to see the usuals and non-usuals at andrea's party. they were very welcoming of her, especially when it came to dishing out the drinks. neither of us really felt like drinking much anyway, though, so we just watched as the crowd floated in and out of sobriety. just before midnight, we left back to the marina to try and see the fireworks at mother's beach, but the fog was too thick for us to see anything. we resolved to a bit of martinelli's and a fog-laden drive back to my house.
all this time i've been dishing out the surprises and i've never really realized how good it feels to get a nice big one when it counts.
