mood: envious
music: 'new slang' by the shins
yesterday chris turned 18. it was a fun day that let me forget about a lot of things i needed to forget about. i didn't actually know what we were going to do until about an hour before it started. so first we went to eat at panera's, which is getting worse and worse in my opinion.
then chris casually neglected to mention the movie we were going to, which was very clever of him, because he knew i would never go to a theatre for a movie out of my own accord. it was ok, though; Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events was a couple cranks above mediocre. Very Tim Burton-esque in its settings, and very Edward Gorey-like in its characters and wardrobe. The story followed three orphans trying to clear up some questions concerning their parents' death. i can't really pick out what could've been better, but i was feeling a bit let down after it ended. i guess i'm just a bit jaded when it comes to the traditional family movie.
what was surprising, was that i liked the ending credits more than the movie. it not that the movie was that bad, it was more that the credits were great. basically it was a handful of Edward Gorey ripoff sketches mixed in with the illustrations from Where The Wild Things Are. Still, it was an excellent ripoff.
well, afterwards, we made our eventual way to chris's house, where an ensuing sleepover forced me onto the floor yet again. i still slept normally, and with much less makeout noise throughout the night, as andres and kristy shared a bed with sergio too. i managed to sleep only about 4 hours, though. for some reason, sleep was oddly unsettling.
i woke up a little after 8 and saw that everyone was still sleeping, so i took out my markers and added to the drawings on kristy's backpack. then after many gift shenanigans and an excellent barbeque, we went off on our way.
andres, kristy, and i decided to go to amoeba (i was feeling spontaneous). i bought the soundtrack to garden state, which is ok, but i bought it mostly for the shins' track 'new slang'. go indie-folk! then i did something i've never done before, i rummaged through the clearance section and bought four $1 cds based only on artwork and band name. i managed to like 50% of my selections. the other two were the emo/pop punk garbage i would've dug five years ago.
then we all went for coffee at the brazilian place in westwood before coming to my house and spending the rest of the evening there. the end.
