music: 'pennies' by the smashing pumpkins

italy was good, but not great. i say that after having perished at the merciless hands of the ef tours corporation. we stayed 2 nights in rome, and when i say 'in rome' i mean an hour away from rome by car. the day we did spend in rome/the vatican, we were on a seemingly endless walking tour that didn't really give us much free time outside of 15-20 minutes to buy refreshments and take tourist photos. honestly, the best part of that godforsaken 10-hour walking tour was smoking in the shade with andres in the coliseum right as the perfect breeze blew by.

other than that, i thought the city was very impressive. the next night we spent at a little shoreside village whose name i don't know, and the day after, we spent on the island of capri. at that point i was still enamored by the beautiful environment of the mediterranean, but i was just about ready to go back home.

on the flight i finished catcher in the rye again, since i barely remember reading it in freshman year. the story gives off a peacefully sad feeling. something to accompany acceptance of futility. i can say that i had flashbacks to something i saw a few years back as the ending was unraveling. in the book holden watches his sister and other young kids on a carousel reaching for the golden ring. a while ago, i was at a carnival with a bunch of friends, and it was nearing closing time. everyone was tired and just sitting around. i was watching the mini-carousel as a little girl was riding on it. she was all alone on the machine, but her mother was watching her on the opposite side of where i was. i was so surprised to see her having so much fun from such a simple thing. i'll never forget her smiling little face.

anyway, i have nothing to do, and $200 left over, so i think i'll fill my gas tank and go to amoeba. it's good to be back.
